COUNTERFEITING LAW IN ITALY
Counterfeiting poses significant threats to the reputation of manufacturers of authentic brand products and can pose serious risks to employment and public safety. Any product or brand that consumers have come to trust can potentially be targeted by counterfeiters Not only are there underground counterfeit manufacturing activities, but the street sales of counterfeit goods are too evident in Italy.
Italy being a hub of tourists destination, consumers spend lavishly and hence Italian counterfeit industry thrives. This results in problems and serious devaluation of brand products of the companies which have good reputations.
Since counterfeiting is a direct attack on intellectual property, famous brands require a worldwide monitoring system to detect not only instances of infringement but also of outright counterfeiting. It is in this respect, that the Italian government has taken active steps to stop counterfeiting and to fine knowing purchasers of counterfeit goods as well as increase the amounts of administrative fines against vendors. In order to curb such activities, the law paved the way for the creation of a High Commission with indepedent powers to fight counterfeiting with the cooperation of anti-counterfeiting organizations and take stern action against counterfeiting
