IP Administration (NIPO) - Nigeria
In November 2006, the Federal Government of Nigeria approved the merger of the Patent and Trademark Registry - the Nigerian Copyright Commission and the National Office for Technology Acquisition & Promotion into a new organization called National Intellectual Property Organization (NIPO) under the Ministry of Science and Technology. This organization would be in line with the World Intelloectual Property Organization's mode and standards and would be responsible for all IP administration matters relating to industrial property and copyright in Nigeria.
By the time the Bill takes effect, the Minister of Science and Technology in the meantime has been directed to take over the assets and liabilities of the merged offices and develop processes for an immediate launch of NIPO. In addition, the Minister of Finance has been directed by the president of Nigeria to effect the reallocation of all proportionate and respective funds of the affected offices to NIPO.
